Walker County 4-H Beef and Dairy Heifer Projects

What is the Heifer Project?

Beef Heifers

Beef Heifer projects are open to 4-H members in the 5th-12th grade (or 9-19 years old). There are also age and weight limits that the heifers must meet. Like other 4-H livestock projects, the member must get a calf, care for it daily throughout the project and work with it to get prepared for the shows. Most of these shows are held between November and February with the state show being held at the Agri-Center in Perry, February.

Most all of the shows will have both showmanship classes and weight classes. In the showmanship classes, the judge evaluates how well the 4-H’er and calf work together in the show ring, while the weight classes are based primarily on the heifer’s quality.
Local youth that meet the grade or age requirements and are interested in getting more information on these 4-H livestock projects should contact the Walker County Extension Office at 706-638-2548. It is very important that those interested contact us to get all the details on the heifer’s birth date and weight before going out and getting a calf.

For more information, contact your county Cooperative Extension office.

4-H offers several animal projects for club members. The heifer project involves 4-H’ers caring for and showing a dairy cow.

We have more information at the 4-H office if you and your family are interested in this project. Some local farmers may loan 4-H’ers one of their dairy cows to show. The cows are returned to the farmer at the end of the project. This is a good alternative if you do not want to purchase the animal.

For more information, contact your county Cooperative Extension office.
