How can I become a Master Gardener Volunteer?
Paulding County Extension is accepting applications for new Master Gardener Volunteers for the 2011 training to be held from January 6 –April 14th, 2011 at the North Metro Campus of Chattahoochee Tech in Acworth, Georgia. Classes will meet on Tuesday from 9:00 am until 3:00pm. The Master Gardener Volunteer Program offers horticultural training to individuals interested in volunteering their time and expertise under the direction of their County Extension Agent. Applications are now available at our office and on our webpage and will be accepted until 5:00pm on September 30, 2010. Enrollment in the program is limited and the cost of the training for those who are accepted is $140.00.
Applicants who are accepted as Master Gardener Interns will receive 40 hours of horticultural training from Extension Specialists, Agents, local horticulturists, and veteran Master Gardeners. Core classes include basic botany, plant physiology, soils, basic entomology, weed identification and control and a variety of other horticulture related topics. Participants must attend twelve classes and take and pass a midterm and final exam. Participants are obligated to return 50 hours of volunteer service to the County Extension Office within the first year after the training in order to attain Master Gardener status. After the first year, Master Gardeners volunteer a minimum of 25 hours in order to maintain their title. Projects range from answering questions in the extension office, conducting community plant clinics, working with educators and students in schools, to community horticultural projects.
Acceptance into the 10 week training program is by application. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you learn about the program and have an interest. The program is generally offered once per year in the winter, but you can submit an application anytime by completing this information. In some years a special Master Gardener Course designed to create teams of School Master Gardeners is offered.
