DeKalb County Extension Office:
Speakers Bureau Guidelines

Because of the large number of speaking requests, DeKalb County Extension educators and volunteers can meet with your group only if the following requirements are met:

  • A minimum of 25 members of your group must be present.
  • The meeting must be held in a public place.
  • The meeting location must be open to everyone without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, age or physical challenge.
  • Arrange for a program at least one month ahead of time.
  • The Extension can present only one program per group, per year.

4-H Youth Development

Developing Leaders

4-H serves as facilitator and deliverer of the Youth Leadership initiative for Georgia. We train youth leadership teams such as honor societies, academic and non-academic and 4-H cloverclass officers for school club leadership roles. Specific duties and responsibilities of officers will be discussed along with basic parliamentary procedures.

Healthy Lifestyles Choices

4-H is a community of young people across America learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills. Sessions are designed to teach youth basic social skills through hands-on activities on healthy lifestyle choices and conflict resolution skills.

Getting Youth in Check with Reality

Reality Check is a two hour personal finance education program designed for grades 7-12 or ages 13-19. Simulation provides students with a brief look at the realities of being financially responsible adults. Students gain knowledge in writing checks, balancing a checkbook, paying monthly bills, providing for a family, paying taxes, finding and paying for childcare and buying a car.

Teaching youth the importance of image, manners and business etiquette. The Art of Introducing People; Formal Gatherings; The Handshake; Table Manners; Sports and Games.

Environmental Awareness

How can youth help resolve current water and environmental issues? Using hands-on activities, youth explore current environmental issues affecting their community and the role they can play in conservation.

Horticulture & Natural Resources

Envirocare for Your Lawn

How to successfully establish and care for a home lawn. Covers types of grasses, establishment, renovation, and proper care. Emphasis on low input of fertilizers, water, and pesticides.

treeWaterwise Landscaping - Xeriscape

How to establish and maintain a beautiful landscape while conserving water. Emphasis on using native plants, zoning water needs, using mulches, and planting drought-tolerant plant selections.

Using Yard Resources - Composting & Mulching

The secret to good gardening is soil improvement before planting. Learn to recycle yard trimmings into yard resources, compost and mulch. Learn how to use compost to build a soil suitable for good plant growth.

Trees: The Misunderstood Resource

How to select the right tree for the right spot and how to care for new plantings, as well as valuable existing trees. This program includes general information on the best ways to care for trees to insure their health and longevity.

Family & Consumer Sciences

Eating for the Health of It

What should you eat to stay healthy? Learn more about general nutrition, reducing sodium, sugar, and fat. Additional topics include fast foods, food safety and diabetes education.

Are you fighting a losing battle - the battle of the bulge? If so, a good way to win is understanding problem behaviors that trigger eating and how to control them.

Parenting Today

Parenting is one of the most important challenging roles we will ever have. Select one of the following topics: guidance, discipline, prenatal and child nutrition, brain development, child safety, and ages and stages of child development.

Multi-Cultural and Diversity Issues

Understanding the growing changes in the ethnic and cultural diversity of the DeKalb County population. A look at unique needs of different ethnic groups.

Indoor Air Quality

Is the air you breathe in your home safe? Learn how to keep your indoor air safe for your family. The DeKalb Cooperative Extension Office also offers education about the health risks related to radon.
