Events and Activities
Backyard Association - The Backyard Association is sponsored by the Coweta County Master Gardeners and provides free gardening sessions for the general public the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
The speaker for the July 14 meeting will be Ms. Shirley Cole. Shirley is a Gwinnett County Master Landscape Gardener. She will talk about tough plants for our tough times. She wants to tell an overall story of your house, including your landscape.
Shirley has a degree in Interior Design, but she decided to move her art to another level - the garden. She has been a garden designer for 15 years and knows that a garden design presents a challenge because it is complex and must deal with nature.
Shirley will use the current events in the economy to show how garden design is coping and how gardens are getting back to the basics. Sometimes the perfect design is difficult since most homeowners move in and have plants that are already established. Shirley says, "People want charming gardens. They are tired of bland landscapes.'
Almost two years ago, the Shirley opened the Garden Keeper, a small shop in a former auto parts store on Marietta’s west side. The charming site was redone as a country cottage and filled with an array of gifts and garden items, as well as plants during warmer weather.
Come learn how to use those plants that you have, add a few more and tell your own story. The sessions last approximately one hour, and Master Gardeners are available before and after the session to help with gardening questions. Call (770) 254-2620 to register for door prizes.
The Surplus Vegetable Market will begin on Monday, June 15 at the Coweta County Expo Center on Temple Avenue. Hours will be Monday and Wednesday from 10:00 am to 1:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Come enjoy fresh, homegrown vegetables! Get copy of the Rules and Regulations and a Registration Form if you would like to participate and sell your own surplus vegetables.

Coweta County Extension offers a variety of programs for youth, including the Junior Master Gardener program (JMG). The JMG program helps cultivate youth and encourages involvement in the local community service projects. The JMG program, designed by Texas A&M University Extension is modeled after the adult Master Gardener program. Using fun and creative activities, the JMG program offers science based environmental horticultural education along with leadership and life skills development. The program is designed to help youth become good gardeners and good citizens so they can make a positive contribution to their family, school and community. For more information call the Coweta County Extension Office at (770) 254-2620.
